The awards were the culmination of a 10-week fundraising campaign and were given out May 9, 2014, during a program at the Kravis Center. The event, hosted by WPBF-25 co-anchors Tiffany Kenney and Todd McDermott, drew almost 300 supporters.

Twelve candidates, several of whom were touched by blood cancer, were nominated for the award and together raised $498,163.

The other candidates for “Man & Woman of the Year” were: William Cavanaugh, of The Law Office of William M. Cavanaugh; Aime Dunstan, of IT! Events & Media; Brandy Guthrie, Marcos Gonzalez & Associates; Renee Komanetsky; Lee Levenson, Jr., Steinger, Iscoe & Greene, PA; Sydnee Newman, LaBovick Law Group; Shachar Peles, M.D., Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute; and Sasha Wahl, Oxford International.

During the fundraising period, candidates were judged solely on their success in generating funds to advance the mission of LLS. Every dollar raised counted as one “vote.” The candidates competed in honor of the Society’s “Boy & Girl of the Year” – local children who are leukemia survivors and inspire others. Joshua Johnson, 16, and 4-year-old Piper Apfel were honored this year.

Sponsors of the 2014 Palm Beach Man & Woman of the Year Grand Finalé included Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute; Retina Care Specialists; Ted Peroulakis, of Girard, Kovarik & Associates; Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Resort & Spa; WPBF-25 News; The Palm Beacher & Jupiter Magazines; and KOOL 105.5. The kickoff event host was Saks Fifth Avenue at The Gardens Mall.

All proceeds from the “Man & Woman of the Year” benefit the LLS mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. In addition to research, proceeds will be used to provide financial aid to needy local patients and their families.
