PALM BEACH, Fla. – Continuing a tradition begun by Marjorie Merriweather Post more than 50 years ago, 450 diplomats, philanthropists and other supporters gathered for the International Red Cross Ball.

The gala drew ambassadors from The Netherlands, Italy, Hungary and Georgia, as well as many former diplomats from the United States.

Kathryn C. Vecellio chaired the ball, which was held at The Breakers.

“This evening is a tribute not only to the organization and all that it accomplishes, but to the volunteers and the generosity of so many in this room who contribute support,” she said.

Patrick Park was honorary chairman and Mary Ourisman served as ambassador chair. Event co-chairs were Paula Butler, Mei Sze Greene, Monika Preston, Amanda Schumacher, Laurie Silvers and Rhonda Wilkins. Mary Mochary and Beverly White Yeager were honorary co-chairwomen.

The Peter Duchin Orchestra performed at the Feb. 7, 2014, event.

Since 1957, the affair has raised funds for the American Red Cross. For almost 100 years locally, the American Red Cross Palm Beaches–Treasure Coast Region has helped disaster victims, funded lifesaving skills training, such as CPR and first aid, and supported members of the military and their families.

Earlier this season, Vecellio and her husband, Leo Vecellio, honored leading benefactors of the ball at a kickoff cocktail reception aboard the M/Y Lady Kathryn V.
